The music video is a represented as sixties inspired with the opening of the video taking inspiration from the famous film 'Austin Powers' where a television is being turned on which is done in order to attract different groups of people and is known intertextulity. The mise en scene introduces the eccentric patterns and clothing of the sixties which play a role throughout the video. Ariana Grande is a successful pop singer who has a large fan base and explains why more than 829 million people have viewed 'Problem'.
The video starts by introducing the two artists Ariana Grande (AG) and Iggy Azalea (IA) with both using lip syncing along with the song as well as choreographed dancing to the beat with background dancer so the video is not boring to its viewers. The first verse of the song features four main scenes which the artist AG is in three of them because she is the main singer. The colours used in the scene contrast each other with some using only black and white and others bright colours so they stand out therefore making the video more interesting. Camera movements are quick to match the speed of the song with editing techniques such as cross cutting to take the viewers to different scenes of the video. The chorus introduces a third artist who is a male who repeats the words 'one less problem without you' in order to create depth within the music and an extreme close up of his lips is all the audience sees of the male in the first part but then a close up of his face with the star AG is shown in a two shot. The second verse introduces another scene which contrasts the main black and white scene with its multi-coloured background. After the second chorus the artist Iggy Azalea comes in with mise en scene: hair, clothing and makeup inspired by the sixties. A two shot of both AG & IA introduces how the two female artists are cooperating together to make the song with computer generated imagery to create the surreal background. After the fast upbeat section by the artist IA a slower tempo is introduced until the chorus is repeated once again. The final scene shows the main artist AG walking away and taking a seat to indicate the end and repetition of the opening scene but in a style of turning an old television off (Austin powers inspired).
This music video appeals to the target audience by using two artists which means a wider range of people will be more like to watch as well as using two styles, rapping & singing. It also appeals to the target audience because it is exciting and different set for a modern day music video therefore taking the audience back in time to another eras fashion and choreography.
