Filming part 3

For this part of my music video I needed to take images which I plan to put together to create a moving video. To make my music video stand out compared to others I used the Lego friends toys and I created a date scene here. The pictures below are only the beginning to give a small example of what my final product will look like. I had slight difficulty with the equipment because the tripod was broken so when moving the dolls every time the camera moved but I had to work round this by balancing the camera so it stayed in the same position. Below I have included images of both my set up where I used the camera and tripod spoken about in my previous post and also includes examples of some of the images taken to put in my music video.

Filimg part 2

This was the second time that I filmed with my artist and below is a  small selection from the shoot day. I decided to change the look of my artist to try get a better resemblances to one of the dolls. I put her in a light pink top and denim skirt which was similar to the dolls outfit because I wanted to make it look like my artist was singing about her teenage dream and she was one of the dolls.

Filming part 1

Today was the first step of filming my music video. After reviewing my footage I've decided that I will re-do this part of my filming because despite recording some good shots I do not have enough footage to complete my video. I will use this shoot as a 'test shoot' where I developed experience and a better understanding of how to use my camera.
Despite being very pleased with the general Mise en scene of the takes I felt that I needed more to make my video attractive to my target audience and I hope to do this on my next planned shooting day. As you can see from the videos the quality isn't as good as it should be for a music video because the I did not use a tripod. I decided on the day not to use the tripod so I had a lot more free movement with my filming therefore capturing different angles but this only made the footage unsteady. I also asked my artist to trying different dancing and this bought her closer to the camera in some of the videos which created a large amount of shadowing therefore not giving the right look for my video.

Not only did I take videos I also included some pictures to introduce my artist and also use for my ancillary tasks.

Storyboard of music video

I created a storyboard so when it came to me filming my music video I would have a rough idea of what I needed to do. As my storyboard shows in scene 1 I am unsure what I will do yet so I put two possibilities, using paper hearts to spell out 'TD' or using scrabble pieces to spell 'Teenage Dream'. The second scene would be of a date between the two pieces of Lego where they go to park for a picnic and I will use a picnic set from a childhood toy and cut up leaves so it has the effect of being outside in a park. The next scene will involve my artist where I hope to film her in a white background studio where she will lip sync and I will do her makeup and hair to have a doll like look similar to my Lego piece. The fourth scene will be my Lego on another date at the ice-cream parlour then a repeat of Tayla in the white background studio. After this they will go on there third and final date f the music video which will be at the pizza parlour. By doing all these different dates it will imitate the 'teenage dream'. After the repeat of Tayla lip syncing I will end the song with flashes between the dolls and artist.

Questionnaire Analysis.

1.The first question I asked was 'What gender are you?' and out of the eight people that I asked only one person was male and seven were female.

2.The second question I asked was 'What age group do you come under?' which I asked to see whether my question was answered by a specific group and this may affected their opinions on some of the questions.
3. The third question I asked was 'What is your favourite music genre?' and I did this because I wanted to look at which was the most popular and see if my choice of song was under this genre. The most popular was 'Pop' which is the genre of 'Teenage Dream' therefore reassuring me that this was a good idea for my music video.

4. The next question I asked was 'How often do you watch music videos?' which had interesting results. The results received told me that music videos are popular way to listen to music due to no-one answered with 'Never' but also a lot of people listen through other avenues because over half answered with 'Few times a week'.

5.  The fifth question I asked was 'Where do you hear about music videos? which was answered with a varied response. Out of all of the people asked 'Social media' was the most popular answer with 7/8 people saying this is a way that they hear about music videos. I decided to let the people who answered my question circle as many as they feel right for this question because they may find out in many different ways. There was only one response for 'Other?' and below the question there is space to elaborate further with person 8 explained how they find out via watching adverts on YouTube.

6. For question six it was based around the opinion of the individual and I asked ' What do you expect to be in my music video from hearing the song?' I did this to develop a better understanding of what my target audience expects so it will make them want to watch it. After looking at each response in detail, all people asked seemed to have a similar idea of what they expect in my music video. Some things mentioned include-
  • 'Bright colours'
  •  'A party with loads of bright light'
  •  'toys acting out lyrics'
  • 'teenage girl in loads of different locations'
  •  'teenagers having fun'
  • 'choreography'
By supplying me with these ideas I now have a better understanding of what is expected in my music video and I hope to incorporate some of these ideas.

7.The next question I asked was 'What do you like to see in a music video?' where I asked the people to specify whether like 'narrative', 'concept', 'hybrid' and 'performance' and I got very conclusive result. Half the people answering my questionnaires voted for narrative and quarter voted for performance. Only 1 person voted for hybrid and they specified in the space which was provided below that they particularly like 'Performance/ Narrative'.
8. My final question was also based on the opinion of those who answered my questionnaire and I will use this feedback to help me with ideas for my music video. Some things mention include-
  • 'Huge house'
  • 'Toy house'
  • 'Park'
  • 'Bedroom'
  • 'Café'
  • 'Beach'
  • 'Woodland'
How will I use this information?
I will use this information to help improve my video and make it stand out as a video that has listened to my audiences ideas. I plan to incorporate the locations suggested and some of the main ideas suggested. I will use social media to advertise and gather feedback for my music video because this was a popular way that the people answering my questionnaire said they heard about new upcoming videos.

Star theory

The star image was discovered by Richard Dyer where in his first book 'Stars' he developed the idea that the perception of films were influenced by the stars that were featured in them, which suggests how heavily influential the star image is in the media.
An example of  star image  is Lana Del Rey because she is known for her indie music and style.  I created this mood board to show an example of a star image and how the artist is highly influential due to a lot of people following her style.

Target Audience

Who is my target audience?
After receiving my questionnaires back I learnt that a popular genre of music listened to is pop which helped confirm that my song was the right choice. The target audience of those listening Is usually aimed at 12-18year olds females and the lyrics to my song relate to these teen years. In these years of a persons life they are enthusiastic about makeup, shopping, clothes, young love and friends. Despite having a female target audience by using the Lego this could help to bring a male audience who are interested in the Lego toys.

My mood board above shows examples of what a typical 12-18yearold female would enjoy. They shop in shops such as Primark because they don't have a lot of money and the shop sells up to date fashionable items for an affordable price. They also are introduced to make up, technology and like to read to magazines so they can hear about the latest gossip. Often teenage girls go out with there friends to pizza places, the park and ice-cream shops which I plan to use in my music video.

Feedback for final idea-

Feedback on my ideas is extremely important because otherwise i will not meet the criteria expected of my target audience. The first person I asked for feedback on my idea seemed to like what I am planning to do because i am using an artist still despite the dolls playing a key part of the video and she also touched on how difficult it may be to do it the way i plan to but i think i will be able to do this even if it may be time consuming. The second person i spoke to commented on how she feels as though my video will be 'effective' and reminded me not to move the dolls too much in between images.

My Music Video Final Idea

My Props- Due to the style of my music video I needed to find certain props that would suit my video. When I was younger I was lucky enough to receive gifts and play with toys that are included in the pictures below: Ice-cream parlour, picnic set, pizza parlour and the Lego friends. I will be using these toys to take pictures therefore bringing my Lego friends to life.
For my chorus I will be taking a different approach and be using my artist where she will be lip syncing. I will do this in a white background studio and this will help me to create a professional effect because this is scene in many music videos. After a lot of thought on what she should wear I have decided to put my artist in a red halter neck top and also do her makeup to give her a doll look.

The equipment I plan to use of the course of time that I will be filming. The first thing I will be using  is a canon camera which will help me to take clear and professional images, studio lights for my chorus where I will be filming my artist singing and finally a tripod which will keep my recording steady therefore making it look professional.

Instituations- My Music Label

The Universal Music Group- The universal music group is an organisation that comprises of over eight major music labels, for example 'Capitol', 'Island and 'Def Jam'. There has been some popular names signed to the label therefore making it an extremely successful record label and some of the artists included Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani and ABBA

EIM- EIM are a record label which over see various companies and were founded in 1972. Similarly to Universal Music Group, there are many successful artists that have managed to have a great career through the company, for example Bastille, Krept and Konan and The Vamps.

Warner Music Group- The final record label I looked at was the Warner Music Group and this is known as ne of the most prominent and successful record labels in the history of music. Some artists who are signed to the label include David Guetta and Ed Sheeran who are well known artist who have produced many singles/albums.

My music label-
As apart of the process of making my music video I needed to create my own record company which I could produce my song and music video through. I named my label 'Hickman Records' which is a simple but professional sounding name.

Social media feedback- On music Video idea

I felt it was very important to gather feedback on my ideas from my target audience because I wanted confirmation that they liked my ideas otherwise it would not be enjoyed by my audience. Each piece of feedback was really positive and they all liked my idea! They also suggested other ideas to improve my video, for example including scenes of heartbreak and also were really encouraging.
